Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to join Tom Holland in Spider-Man 3?

We already know that Jamie Foxx’s Electro is returning for the next Spider-Man movie, but that could just be the tip of the iceberg.

With the Infinity Saga in the rearview mirror, Marvel and Sony are seeking new ways to build up hype for their next slate of superhero movies. One of the buzziest is the third live-action Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland, the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. We already know the movie is going to feature some faces from the franchise’s past, including Jamie Foxx as Electro, who appeared opposite Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014.

How can multiple iterations of the franchise cross over like this? Well, we also know that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will be in the movie, taking on the mentor role previously filled by Tony Stark and then Nick Fury. Seeing as how Doctor Strange stories often deal with multiple dimensions (his next movie is literally called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), it’s possible Spider-Man 3 could see our hero dimension-hopping.

And if that’s the case, it opens up the possibility for other former Spider-Man actors to return, franchise turnover be damned. In fact, FandomWire claims that both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire — who played Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s 2000s-era trilogy — have signed on to appear in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 3!

This is a rumor, but it makes sense; why stop at Electro, after all? Per FandomWire, the two former Spider-Men will appear in the final act of the movie — much like the final act of Endgame — to defeat an onslaught of classic Spider-Man villains. It also says that there could be a spinoff in the works for Jamie Foxx’s Electro.

I’m totally down to see all three modern iterations of Spider-Man team up. It could also be part of Sony’s broader plan to develop their own Spider-Man cinematic universe, which includes the Venom films as well as the upcoming Morbius movie. And then there’s Into the Spider-Verse, which already deals with multiple dimensions.

Before we wrap up, let’s underline that the Maguire and Garfield news is just a rumor at the moment, but considering how much Sony seems to love the multiple universe idea, we can see it happening.

In any case, shooting on Spider-Man 3 may already be underway, per Collider:

Spider-Man 3 is set to release on December 17, 2021.
