Showrunner Jon Favreau is open to doing a Mandalorian movie, and is pumped to begin production on season 3 before the end of the year!

The Mandalorian season 2 is just around the corner: mark those calendars for October 30! But ahead of the premiere, showrunner Jon Favreau is already gearing up for production on the next season. Speaking to Variety, he said the team is “on schedule” to get back to work “before the end of the year.”

Of course, COVID-19 has thrown a wrench in things, but Favreau says he and his team are “operating under the assumption that we’ll be able to go forward.” It’s a little easier for a show like The Mandalorian to follow safety precautions since many of the characters, including the lead, are already wearing masks as part of their character’s outfit.

In fact, Pedro Pascal isn’t allowed to take off his character, Din Djarin’s helmet. Yikes, can you imagine being stuck in that thing for long stretches of time? That does not sound pleasant.

“We’re in very small situations and oftentimes we have a lot of characters in masks,” Favreau said. “And we also have a lot of digital work that augments things. So we’re a show that’s probably well-equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting.”

Even with just one season under its belt, The Mandalorian has done extremely well (let’s be honest, it’s totally because of the adorable Baby Yoda). It’s done so well, in fact, that some fans are wondering if there’s potential big screen venture in the future. For his part, Favreau is “definitely open to it.”

"The line is blurring now. Things that you would have only seen in the movie theater, you’re seeing on streaming, and I think it could go the other way as well."

Disney recently announced that it was organizing itself to focus more on streaming, so I can definitely see something like this happening. Movies, TV shows…they’re all kind of becoming the same thing, so why not make a Mando movie? Maybe one could serve as the season 3 finale!

In the meantime, we can watch the further adventures of Mando and Baby Yoda when The Mandalorian season 2 premieres on Disney+ on Friday, October 30.
