The rumor is that former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will join Tom Holland in the next movie. Sony has responded, and they didn’t say no…
Recently, rumors began to swirl that the third Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland — co-produced by Sony and Marvel — would feature the return of some familiar faces: Tobey Maguire, who played Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s trilogy from the 2000s; and Andrew Garfield, who played the superhero in The Amazing Spider-Man movies. These rumors followed the news that Jamie Foxx’s Electro, last seen opposite Garfield in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, would show up. What other surprises does the movie have in store?
Now, Sony itself has weighed in, issuing a statement to Entertainment Tonight: “Those rumoured castings are not confirmed.”
Yes, it’s short, but it’s not really to the point. They didn’t say, “Those actors are not going to be in the movie.” They said, “It’s not confirmed that those actors aren’t in the movie.” In this specific case, we’re inclined to believe that a lack of a “no” actually might mean “yes.”
Next comes the question of how three Spider-Men might appear in the same movie. For the answer, you need only look to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, who’s also confirmed to appear. Doctor Strange spends a lot of time hopping around different dimensions; his next solo movie is literally called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. We don’t know all the details, but it sounds like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man may get mixed up in some dimension-hopping shenanigans, and will see other versions of himself while he’s at it.
Maguire, Garfield and Holland all appearing in the same film would certainly be one way to generate buzz as Marvel heads into a post-Thanos world. Spider-Man 3 has apparently started shooting, so we’ll hopefully find out more soon:
Spider-Man 3: Subtitle Forthcoming is scheduled to land in theaters on December 17, 2021.
