2. Episode 210, “The End of Something”: Five uses time travel for good

More often than not, Five’s time-traveling has gotten him into trouble. But in the season 2 finale, he uses it to save his family after finally taking his father’s advice.

Five has his epiphany after the Handler kills his siblings. With his back against the wall, Five recalls Reginald telling him to use his powers sparingly: try traveling seconds, not decades. With that in mind, Five travels back just a few minutes to the moment right before the Handler shoots his entire family and is then killed herself by the Swede. The Handler still faces a gruesome end, but Five’s quick thinking saves everyone he loves.

Aidan Gallagher does a phenomenal job conveying Five’s battling emotions. He’s in his head, he’s fighting, he’s grief-stricken, but he’s still thinking of a way to fix things. It’s a lot for one character to go through in a few minutes. Gallagher’s ability to layer lots of different feelings on top of each other is something I’ve really come to admire about him as an actor, and it’s a talent he gets to use a lot on The Umbrella Academy.
