Fans awaiting the further adventures of Uhtred son of Uhtred, rejoice! Pre-production on The Last Kingdom season 5 has begun! Destiny is all!

Fans of The Last Kingdom, rejoice! The fifth season of Netflix’s medieval drama has officially entered into pre-production. This comes straight from director of photography, who posted the good news to his Instagram:

"To Bebbanburgh! Off we go again The Last Kingdom. Great to be back."

Palmer worked on four episodes of season 4 and appears to be back for season 5. The show was officially renewed by Netflix back in July, but since then things have been mostly quiet. With COVID-19 a constant roadblock, it’s good to see the work is moving forward.

Executive producer Nigel Merchant also weighed in on the show’s return in Netflix’s official press release. “We are really proud of The Last Kingdom, which continues to entertain audiences all over the world,” he said. “We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so are thrilled to be bringing it back for season 5 on Netflix. With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his quest.”

And just what might that quest entail? Check out the official synopsis, which outlines which books from Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories series will be adapted this time:

"Based on books nine and ten – The Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer – the fifth installment will see Uhtred realize his destiny is more than just Bebbanburg: it is tied to the future of England itself. Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss."

We don’t have a release date yet, but with pre-production underway, filming can’t be too far off.

In the meantime, take gander at Mark Rowley’s (Finan) season 5 armor…if season 5 were actually Rowley’s appearance on The Spanish Princess:

We’re one step closer, arselings!
