2020 may be bereft of new Marvel movies, but 2021 is shaping up to be an absolute banger.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, one of the new Marvel movies that will headline Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has officially wrapped on filming, according to director Destin Daniel Cretton and star Simu Liu, who plays the title character.
“WE. ARE. WRAPPED!” Says it all.
Shang-Chi was originally going to be released in February of 2021, but like a lot of other movies and TV shows, it was slowed down by the coronavirus. It’s now coming out in July.
2021 is going to a big for Marvel movies, and for movies in general. Black Widow, which was going to come out this year, has been pushed back to May, Eternals is coming in November, and Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man movie is due out around Christmas! So we’re going from zero MCU movies in 2020 to four in 2021!
In a private Facebook group, Simu Liu wrote about what it means to himself and his costars to create the first all-Asian MCU movie. “For all of those who hated us because of the color of our skin, or been made to feel less than because of it; NO MORE,” Liu said. “This is OUR movie, and it will be IMPOSSIBLE for Hollywood to ignore us after this.”
The actual story of Shang-Chi has been kept under wraps. In the comics, Shang-Chi is a martial arts master raised by his globalist father in a remote compound. When he goes out into the world to do his father’s bidding, he realizes his dad may not be the humanitarian he thought he was.
Meanwhile, production has officially begun on Spider-Man 3. We know this because Tom Holland said as much on his Instagram, although of course, the post was quickly deleted. It’s still on the internet, though:
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premieres in theaters on July 9, 2021. As for Spider-Man 3, it’s due out on December 17, 2021.
