Kate Winslet re-teams with James Cameron for another water-logged adventure, and this time she’s thrown right in the deep end.
When Kate Winslet worked with James Cameron on Titanic, she narrowly avoided drowning in the ocean. Now, Cameron has her starting right there on the bottom in Avatar 2.
Winslet will play an alien from the planet of Pandora who is obviously very comfortable in the water. The official Avatar Twitter account tweeted out a pre-CGI image of her in action, and it looks ridiculously awesome:
I love the cape. Just overlay the image with colorful fins or wings or someting and your imagination will take you places. Honestly, I’m just happy Winslet is joining forces with Cameron again. It’s about time!
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Winslet said that she is playing a character named Ronal in both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 (there’s also 4 and 5 to come), but that’s just about all she would reveal. What she did talk about is the type of stuff she had to endure for the role, like holding her breath underwater for an extended period of time.
James Cameron really wants Kate Winslet to know what Jack had to endure when Rose let him go, doesn’t he?
"I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar, and that was just incredible. My longest breath-hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds, like crazy, crazy stuff. […] Oh no, actually, I can’t. Yeah, I play a water person. I am a water person."
Winslet isn’t the only one to go above and beyond for these roles. Her 70-year old costar Sigourney Weaver also performed many of her own underwater stunts and impressively held her breath for around six minutes.
I’m quite impressed with the commitment of the cast members. As if holding their breath that long wasn’t enough, they also have perform a scene while they’re at it. Knowing all this, I’m even more excited to see how the movie turns out when it releases on December 16, 2022.
