The Mandalorian is set after the Empire has fallen, but it sounds like Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) isn’t ready to give it up.
Giancarlo Esposito is one of the most talented actors on TV today. I first became a fan of his thanks to his complex portrayal of Sidney Glass / Magic Mirror on the fantasy drama Once Upon a Time, but most people probably recognize him as Gus Fring from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Esposito has also appeared in numerous films, including Malcolm X, The Usual Suspects, Last Holiday, Okja and The Maze Runner film series, among others.
Recently, he appeared as Vought CEO Stan Edgar on The Boys and gave a chilling performance as Imperial remnant Moff Gideon in the first season of The Mandalorian, a role that he will reprise in season 2. I really hope that Esposito continues this trend of sci-fi villainy, because it really suits him!
For those of you who need a refresher, Moff Gideon appears in the last two episodes of season 1. His entrance was pretty epic, and I wasn’t at all surprised when he managed to survive a TIE fighter crash in the finale. Astonishingly, Gideon cut himself free from the wreck with the Darksaber, an artifact that actually has Mandalorian roots. Surely that will come into play very soon.
With Moff Gideon’s return on the horizon, Giancarlo Esposito took some time to talk about his character’s purpose. “My character Moff Gideon is a warden of the galaxy,” he said on Good Morning America, “he is a remnant of the Imperial empire. He is still searching for his quarry which we hope he’ll find.”
Hopefully, Gideon doesn’t even come close to hurting one hair on Baby Yoda’s cute head. It’s also interesting that he characterizes himself as a “warden of the galaxy.” The Empire is toppled during this time period, but clearly Gideon wishes it wasn’t so and may be trying to restore it. Perhaps Baby Yoda’s power can help him do that?
We’ll find out when The Mandalorian season 2 premieres on Friday!
