Stranger Things 4 isn’t coming for “a while,” but will be “really big”
By Dan Selcke
Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler) has good news and bad news: The new season of Stranger Things is a ways off, but it’ll be worth the wait.
Everything was going fine for the fourth season of Stranger Things. Showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer teased that the new episodes would take the gang outside of Hawkins, Indiana, and shooting had gotten far enough long that they’d even released a little teaser showing what became of Sheriff Jim Hopper after that season 3 cliffhanger:
But then came the coronavirus, and Stranger Things, like a lot of other shows and movies, shut down. Shooting has now resumed, but we can kiss goodbye any ideas about getting the new season in the near future.
At least it’ll be worth the wait, according to star Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler). “Honestly, the scripts are great,” she told Vogue. “I’m very excited. I’m excited for Nancy.”
"Everytime we end a season, we all think, where is this going to go? Where can this possibly go? Then we get the scripts for the next season and we’re, like, “Oh my god, wow, like, wow!” So, while I can’t say a lot, except that it’s going to be a while before it comes out, it will definitely be worth it. It’s going to be really big. It’s going to be big!"
Last we checked in on Nancy, she and boyfriend Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) were working for the local paper, about to embark on college careers. Given all the run-ins Nancy has had with inter-dimensional monsters over the past three seasons, might she study particle physics or something? Those gates to dark underworlds aren’t going to close themselves.
As for Harbour, Stranger Things has given his screen career a whole new start. “[Stranger Things] felt like a last at bat for me, and I was like, ‘If I’m going to do this, I’m really going to swing for the fences and put my whole soul into this thing,’” he told Cigar Aficionado.
"I had gotten to a place in Hollywood where I was playing fifth and sixth on the call sheet. It was good – I could make a living and could support a theatre career that allowed me to do more artistic kind of stuff, but I had really given up on the idea that I would be able to tell stories that I really cared about in TV or film."
And now, he can basically write his own ticket; being in a hugely successful Netflix series will do that for you.
While we wait for the return of Stranger Things, you can see Natalia Dyer in Yes, God, Yes, a comedy-drama where she plays a sheltered Catholic high schooler trying to understand the church’s position on sex. That’s on Netflix now. Meanwhile, Harbour is playing Soviet superhero Red Guardian in Black Widow, which keeps getting delayed. It’s now scheduled for May 7th, 2021.
