Avatar 2 star Kate Winslet beats Tom Cruise’s underwater record

Avatar 2 will take us down into the oceans of Pandora, where star Kate Winslet has been spending a lot of her time. In fact, she’s just set a record.

If you were a kid in 2009, then chances are you’ve just become accustomed to the feeling of waiting for the next Avatar movie to come out. Seriously, it’s been so long since James Cameron took viewers to Pandora that another Avatar movie seems like a fever dream. However, there is indeed a sequel in the works. Several, in fact! And as reported by CNET, star Kate Winslet has just  broken an impressive record while filming Avatar 2.

A lot of the scenes in Avatar 2 will take place underwater. As Kate Winslet is reportedly playing a “water person,” she’s been spending a lot of time holding her breath. She recently held it for a whopping seven minutes, beating out Tom Cruise’s previous record of six minutes, which he set while filming an underwater stunt for Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.

We even have what looks like a photographic record of Winslet breaking the record in real time:

I think it’s so cool that Kate Winslet has achieved this record. It might seem like a small feat, but this could be an important step in paving the way for more female-led action movies. Winslet’s costar Sigourney Weaver is doing impressive underwater stunt work, as well, and her at 70 years old.

Let me put it this way: Kate Winslet would be amazing in an action movie, but Tom Cruise would negate all feelings of joy if he were to star in a romantic comedy. For example, Kate Winslet would be awesome in a Mission: Impossible movie, but Titanic probably wouldn’t have won all those Oscars with Tom Cruise in the lead role. Kate Winslet is such a talented actor that she inevitably makes any project better, while the addition of Tom Cruise is only justifiable if the movie features at least three exploding cars.

Needless to say, I am incredibly pleased that Kate Winslet has beat Tom Cruise’s underwater record. Doing intense stunt-work is something that’s typically associated with male actors, so it’s great to see a serious film actress like Kate Winslet topping a record like this!

As for Avatar 2, expect it out in theaters on December 16, 2022. And then hunker down for the rest!
