Natalie Portman talks about returning to the MCU to play Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder. How will her Thor coexist with Chris Hemsworth’s?

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to premiere on February 11, 2022, and Natalie Portman has already been dropping hints about the film’s plot. Fans will recall that Portman played Jane Foster, an astrophysicist and Thor’s love interest, in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. Foster has only made cameo appearances since then, but the character will soon be making a thunderous return.

Yep, Natalie Portman is returning to the MCU to reprise her role as Jane Foster. Only this time, Jane will have powers of her own. Thor: Love and Thunder will see Jane transform into The Mighty Thor, an incarnation of the deity that’s completely separate from Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.

The new movie will roughly follow the arc of Marvel’s Thor comics, where Jane Foster became the Mighty Thor while also battling cancer. Stopping by The Kelly Clarkson Show, Portman talked a little more about she and Hemsworth’s Thor, last seen heading into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame, will coexist.

“She does have powers,” Portman said. “It’s not exactly the same as Thor. It’s her own version of it. And, she’s called The Mighty Thor.” As for the tone of the movie, it’ll be similar to Thor: Ragnanok, which was also directed by Taika Waititi. “[The movie is] going to be really silly and funny, and great. We’ve got Taika Waititi…He’s wonderful, so I’m very excited to just be with all of them.”

To be completely honest, Jane Foster was never my favorite MCU character. Compared to well-rounded characters like Pepper Potts, Peggy Carter, and Natasha Romanov, she just kinda falls flat.

Granted, Thor and Thor: The Dark World aren’t the most amazing movies in the MCU. Those films tried to make Thor serious and brooding, whereas Thor: Ragnarok was exceptional because it embraced the God of Thunder as the goofy, foolhardy, and vulnerable diety with a heart of gold that we’ve come to know and love. The Thor franchise has flourished under Taika Waititi’s direction, a trend that I hope will continue with Thor: Love and Thunder.

We’ll find out for sure when the movie hits theaters on February 11, 2022.

Next. Let's dreamcast the X-Men before they appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. dark
