The Umbrella Academy season 3 is (sort of) confirmed
Despite its popularity, Netflix hasn’t officially renewed The Umbrella Academy for a third season yet. But it’s looking imminent:
The first season of The Umbrella Academy arrived on Netflix in February 2019, with a second season following in July of this year. People immediately latched on to the dysfunctional, superpowered Hargreeves family, and the cliffhanger at the end of season 2 has these new fans more eager than ever to find out what happens next.
Still, Netflix hasn’t officially announced that it’s renewed the show for season. However, we have good news: according to industry rag Production Weekly, which is used by Hollywood types to track shoot dates, a third season of the show will start filming in February of 2021, and last for about six months. If you have that, who needs an official renewal announcement?
I absolutely loved the first season of The Umbrella Academy. The Hargreeves family is a hot mess, but their dynamic is great and their backstory was laid out so well. Even though all of the main characters have unique superpowers, they very clearly have a long way to go before they can claim to be heroes. Five’s (Aidan Gallagher) return was a great catalyst and the reveal that Vanya (Ellen Page) had powers the entire time was incredible. Over the course of season 1, viewers watched the siblings learn how to truly work together in order to avoid doomsday.
I was less impressed with season 2. Granted, it was cool to see how each of the siblings adapted to being transported back in time. Klaus (Robert Sheehan) using Ben (Justin H. Min) to create a cult following was particularly hilarious. However, it seemed like the Hargreeves siblings forgot all of the lessons about teamwork that they learned in season 1, and adding another end-of-the-world crisis to the mix seemed a little redundant.
The season 2 finale saw the siblings return to their correct timeline, only to realize that their actions have had unforeseen consequences. Due to their meddling with the past, The Umbrella Academy never existed. The Hargreeves siblings come face to face with their replacements, The Sparrow Academy, including their previously deceased brother Ben.
I can’t wait to see how Luther, Vanya, Klaus, Five, Diego, Ben, and Allison handle the fallout in season 3!
