Emilia Clarke and Hugh Laurie team up for new Terry Pratchett adaptation
Emilia Clarke and Hugh Laurie are the dream team we didn’t know we needed. And starring in a fantasy movie based on one of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books? Perfect.
If there are any two actors that I love to watch in any given movie or television show, it’s Emilia Clarke and Hugh Laurie. I absolutely loved Hugh Laurie on House, and seeing him in movies like Stuart Little and The Borrowers really demonstrates what an amazing performer he is. On the other hand, Emilia Clarke was iconic as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, and her ability to shine in tepid movies like Last Christmas and Solo: A Star Wars Story is indicative of her acting prowess. Now, these two thespians are set to co-star in an upcoming Terry Pratchett adaptation!
According to Empire, Clarke and Laurie will be the lead voice actors in The Amazing Maurice, based on Pratchett’s Discworld novel The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents. The film will also feature the talents of David Thewlis, Himesh Patel, Gemma Arterton and Hugh Bonneville.
The novel tells the story of a cunning cat who enlists a kid and a group of talking rats to help him with his money-making scheme. However, their con goes sideways when they arrive in a town called Bad Blintz.
Who is Terry Pratchett?
Terry Pratchett was an English humorist and fantasy novelist. He had his first story published when he was just 13 years old! Over the course of his life, Pratchett became one of the United Kingdom’s most successful writers.
His first novel, titled The Carpet People, was published in 1971 when Pratchett was 23 years old. Several of his works have been made into movies, including Going Postal, Hogfather, and The Colour of Magic. Pratchett is best known for his Discworld series of fantasy novels, with 41 books in total. He also co-authored Good Omens with Neil Gaiman.
Pratchett received numerous awards over the course of his career. In 2009, he was awarded a knighthood for his services to literature.
Unfortunately, Terry Pratchett passed away in 2015 after a lengthy battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 66 years old at the time of his death. His final Discworld novel, The Shepherd’s Crown, was published posthumously.
Pratchett’s work is enjoying a revival right now, with multiple screen adaptations in the works. In addition to The Amazing Maurice, BBC America is making a show about the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork, who appear in several Discworld novels; that’s due out in January.
The more Pratchett on our screens, the better. And with Clarke and Laurie bringing them to life, even better.
