The National’s Matt Berninger is “f**king pissed” he didn’t get a Game of Thrones cameo

Game of Thrones is known for giving cameos to musicians, but despite doing some great music for the show, it never happened for The National.

Game of Thrones was known for giving cameos to musicians over the years, from the drummer from Coldplay appearing at the Red Wedding to Ed Sheeran famously appearing in a scene with Arya.

Knowing all this, The National frontman Matt Beringer sounded pretty annoyed that he never got his chance, especially since the connections were there. “Alec Bemis, who was Bryce [Dessner, National guitarist]’s friend in school, is also really close friends with Dan Weiss, who was one of the creators of Game Of Thrones, and Dan Weiss has been a huge fan of the National, I think, from literally the first record,” Beringer told Stereogum. Plus, The National recorded the epic version of “The Rains of Castamere” fans first heard playing over the credits of the episode “Blackwater”:

And the band actually did visit the set, so there was opportunity, as well. “The National’s been to the top of the Wall,” Beringer said. “We were in Belfast. We’ve been to Castle Black. We couldn’t post anything but there’s all these great pictures of us at the top of the Wall, at Castle Black.” Still, it never happened, and Beringer is having none of it:

"I’m pissed. I’m f**king pissed! I never got to be in it. I mean, we were literally there and we all have beards and shit."

Beards do tend to help your case.

Beringer doesn’t know what scene he and his bandmates watched being filmed, but maybe we can guess at it:

"They were doing a big scene. It was on the other side of the Wall, at the entrance to the cave, where all the giants and everybody are collecting. It was mostly Jon Snow — he was there kind of by himself standing there, and they were going to CG in some giants or something. Basically we spent all day in the freezing cold watching Kit Harington stand in front of that gate for a while. Which is a different location than Castle Black, and then we went to Castle Black."

All hope is not lost for The National, though; they could still visit Westeros with a cameo in House of The Dragon
