We’re not just getting a sequel to 2018’s horror hit A Quiet Place, but also a spinoff. Now if only the sequel could come out…

A Quiet Place was anything but quiet when it dropped in theaters in 2018. Written and directed by John Krasinski, the post-apocalyptic horror movie dominated the box office for months, grossing over $340 million worldwide. It was also Oscar-nominated for best sound editing.

It came as no surprise at all that the movie got a sequel, which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, it appears that we’re not just getting the sequel, but also a spinoff that will further expand the Quiet Place universe.

Per Deadline, the idea for the mysterious spinoff was thought up by Krasinski himself, with the movie being written and directed by franchise newcomer Jeff Nichols (Mud, Midnight Special). Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller are all signed on to produce. We don’t have a specific release date, though it is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.

So what could the spinoff be about? I’d like to get a look at how this whole apocalypse kicked off. The first movie didn’t reveal anything about the origin of the mysterious, noise-sensitive monsters that have humanity on the run. Did they come from space? A science lab somewhere? Some answers would be nice.

From the trailer, it looks like A Quiet Place Part II will have a few flashback scenes to the start of the catastrophe, but then we skip back to the present, likely where most of the movie will take place. I think these flashbacks will introduce characters we’ll meet later in the movie, rather than give us answers about the origins of the monsters themselves.

Alternatively, like any good post-apocalyptic story, I think it would be interesting to see communities form and attempt to get humanity back on its feet, only for things to fall apart again. It’s a bit cliche, but I want to see how quietly people can work together.

Overall, it’s nice to see Paramount keen to bring us more A Quiet Place stories. While I didn’t love the first movie, I did find the monsters intriguing enough to want to learn more about them. There are definitely a lot of exciting directions to go in.

A Quiet Place Part II was meant to arrive in theaters in March but has been delayed twice. Its release date now sits on April 23, 2021, over a year after it was supposed to come out. Fingers crossed!
