Dwayne Johnson is developing a reboot of The Scorpion King

Dwayne Johnson is revisiting his first-ever film role with a reboot of The Scorpion King. Meanwhile, we’re getting a Hägar the Horrible TV show.

Dwayne Johnson has been a Hollywood superstar for years, headlining franchises like The Fast and the FuriousJumanji and the upcoming Black Adam. His first film role after his professional wrestling days was as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns; pretty soon, the character got spun off into his own ancient Egyptian epic, full of sandy fight scenes and questionable CGI.

Johnson has since become quite possibly the most powerful actor in Hollywood, but he still has a soft spot for the character who started it all. That’s undoubtedly part of the reason why he’s developing a Scorpion King reboot with Seven Bucks Productions, according to Deadline.

The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation,” Johnson said in a statement. “I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King and I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hardworking actors today. I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience.”

As you can tell from his phrasing, Johnson may not actually appear in the movie himself, at least not in the main role. He is at the front of every other major action movie in Hollywood, so his time is probably limited. We’ll see who gets chosen instead.

The movie, by the way, will be set in modern times instead of ancient Egypt. Think of it like that failed Mummy reboot with Tom Cruise a few years back, but hopefully a lot more fun.

Moving from Egypt to the Vikings Age, Deadline also reports that King Features and The Jim Henson Company are developing a TV series based on Hägar the Horrible, the comic strip about a funny Viking dude that’s been running since 1973, written first by Dik Browne and then by his son Chris when Dik retired.

I dunno if Hägar is the height of comedy, but writer Eric Ziobrowski (Fresh Off The Boat, American Dad) will certainly have a lot of source material to choose from. And the animated show will be made with the Henson Digital Puppetry Studio, which lets the puppeteers control digital characters in real time…which is how normal puppets work, so good on them.
