Belter terrorist Marco Inaros looms large in the poster for The Expanse season 5. Also, whatever could Amos and Avasarala have to talk about?

Sci-fi fans were upset when SyFy canceled The Expanse after its third season, but it returned on Amazon Prime Video better than ever, with an increased budget and fewer restrictions (people can curse now). The drama — which revolves around the shaky relationship between people on Earth, Mars and in the asteroid belt — has earned a reputation as “Game of Thrones in space.” And now, it’s returning for a fifth season.

And season 5 promises to be an eventful one. The fourth season ended with fringe Belter leader Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander) launching a bunch of asteroids at Earth, which obviously could end badly. Based on the poster Amazon just released, this baddie will loom large and shadowy in the coming episodes:

The next biggest person on the poster is lead character James Holden (Steven Strait), who looks like he may yet again get brought into the power struggle between the interplanetary factions. In a new photo from season 5, we see him having a tense conversation with Fred Johnson (Chad L. Coleman). Like Marco, Fred is a Belter leader, but not nearly as extreme:

Later (or sooner, impossible to tell), James chats with documentarian Monica Stuart (Anna Hopkins) over a cup of noodles:

Gotta win the propaganda war.

Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper) should have an intense season ahead of her. She has a son with Marco, Filip (Jasai Chase Owens). Below, she seems to be wondering how to get Filip away from Marco’s extremist influence:

And then there’s Amos Burton (Wes Chatham), the scene-stealing fighter proudly exercising his right to bear arms on the poster above. He’ll be going to Earth in season 5, where we’ll learn about his shadowy backstory. Why might he need to talk to diplomat Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo)?

Color us curious.

The first three episodes of The Expanse season 5 will drop on Amazon Prime Video on December 16. After that, Amazon will release them at a rate of one per week.
