Jensen Ackles (Dean) is already looking forward to a Supernatural revival

After 15 seasons, Supernatural officially ends tonight. But star Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) doesn’t think the story is over.
After 15 seasons on the air, Supernatural ends tonight. The series finale, “Carry On,” will finally bring to an end the story of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, who have dedicated their lives to saving people from monsters, demons and the forces of darkness.
Or will it? Appearing on the Inside of You Podcast with Micheal Rosenbaum, Jensen Ackles (Dean) sounds like he’s already looking forward to a revival.
“I’ve always thought that there is a possibility of five years down the road, getting the call and saying, ‘Hey, let’s do a little short order action for a streaming network and bring it back for six episodes,’” Ackles said. “I do feel like this isn’t the long goodbye right now. I feel like this is a, ‘Let’s hang this in the closet for now and we’ll dust her off down the road a bit.’”
Considering how long Ackles and costar Jared Padalecki have been playing these roles, it’s a small miracle that he’s still enthusiastic enough to want to come back. But then again, the Supernatural set was always known to be friendly, cordial place, and you can’t spent 15 years with a character and not get attached.
And it sounds like the series finale will leave room for more. The show’s major story arc — a protracted battle against literal God, aka Chuck — was wrapped up in the penultimate episode. “Carry On” will be a quieter affair that focuses on Sam and Dean, and we can’t see either of them dying in a big twist at the end. And even if they do, it’s not like they haven’t come back from it before.
And there would be lots of precedent for a revival. With streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max to work with, plenty of shows have been brought back for short bursts recently, from Full House to Will & Grace to The Twilight Zone to Saved By The Bell to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It’s practically expected at this point.
For all we know, “Carry On” will explicitly set something like this up. We’ll find out tonight.
