’80s horror icon Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) joins Stranger Things 4
By Dan Selcke
Of COURSE Stranger Things has cast stars from the ’80s in its upcoming fourth season. The show gets an infusion of new blood:
On top of being a fun supernatural thriller, Stranger Things is an unabashed celebration of the 1980s, and it has the cast members to prove it. Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice) plays Will’s mother Joyce, Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) is the mayor of town of Hawkins, Indiana, and now, Robert Englund — Freddy Krueger himself — is joining the cast as an unstable murderer.
Typecast much?
The full list of new cast members comes from TV Line. Check it out:
- Englund plays Victor Creel, a man imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital for a gruesome murder in the 1950s.
- Jamie Campbell Bower (who was in the cancelled Game of Thrones prequel Blood Moon) is Peter Ballard, an orderly at a psychiatric hospital, probably the same one where Creel is being held. Watch out, Peter!
- Eduardo Franco is Argyle, Jonathan’s new best friend, a fun-loving stoner and pizza delivery boy.
- Joseph Quinn is Eddie Munson, an 80’s metalhead who runs The Hellfire Club, Hawkins High’s official Dungeons & Dragons club. “Hated by those who don’t understand him — and beloved by those who do — Eddie will find himself at the terrifying epicenter of this season’s mystery.” Sounds serious: also, we finally what exactly “the Hellfire Club” is; that’s the title of the season premiere.
- Sherman Augustus is Lt. Colonel Sullivan, who believes he knows how to stop the evil in Hawkins once and for all. 10-1 he dies gruesomely by the evil he’s trying to stop.
- Mason Dye is Jason Carver, a rich, handsome athlete who’s dating the most popular girl in school. You know, there are a lot of references to high school here. Are the kids in high school this season? I know that Steve, Nancy and Jonathan have all graduated.
- Nikola Djuricko is Yuri, a seedy Russian smuggler who loves bad jokes, cold hard cash, and crunchy style peanut butter.
- Tom Wlaschiha is Dmitri, a Russian prison guard who befriends Sheriff Jim Hopper, who we know is alive — somehow — in a Soviet gulag.
Game of Thrones fans may recognize Wlaschiha as the guy who played Jaqen H’ghar, Arya Stark’s mysterious master in the House of the Black and White. We already got a glimpse of him in Soviet uniform an earlier teaser for season 4:
The cast is filling out nicely, and of course it’s fun that they cast an ’80s horror icon like Englund. By season 6, they’re gonna run out of ’80s stars to cast.
There’s no word on when Stranger Things 4 will be out. If it weren’t for the pandemic, things would be going faster, but at least they’re goine.
