Deadpool 3 moves forward at Marvel Studios

It’s official: Deadpool is bringing his hard-R antics and fourth wall-breaking shenannigans to Marvel Studios. What would Captain America make of this guy?

Disney had a dilemma: through Marvel Studios, it’s behind the most successful superhero franchise of all time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not long ago, it purchased 20th Century Fox and all that came with it, including orphaned Marvel heroes like the X-Men and Deadpool. The Deadpool movies with Ryan Reynolds in particular have been huge hits, but they’re not exactly Disney’s style: they’re vulgar, violent and relentlessly break the fourth wall. Could the movies continue under Disney’s roof, or was this series over?

It’s the first one. Deadline reports that work on Deadpool 3 is moving forward, with Reynolds returning to play the beloved merc with a mouth. Both Marvel Studios and Reynolds are all in on a pitch from writers Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux, a team of sisters who have won Emmys for their work on Bob’s Burgers. There’s no director lined up as yet, but David Leitch, who directed the second movie, isn’t expect to return because of scheduling issues.

What will the new Deadpool movie actually be about? No idea. For right now, it’s probably enough for fans to know that it’s happening. With the character being so popular, that was basically a given, particularly after Reynolds visited Marvel Studios last year, but with such a mismatch between content and studio, we couldn’t be certain.

There’s no release date for Deadpool 3 yet, obviously, but Deadline does assure fans that it will keep its hard “R” rating. The rest of the MCU movies are PG-13 at most, but maybe this can change things, or else be kept in its own little bubble.
