Letitia Wright (Shuri) to get a bigger role in Black Panther 2
By Dan Selcke
Chadwick Boseman passed earlier this year, but Black Panther 2 WILL go forward, and the details of how are starting to come together.
Since actor Chadwick Boseman died earlier this year, the future of the incredibly successful superhero franchise he headlined — Black Panther — has been in doubt. Would Marvel opt to continue the series with a new actor? (It’s assured fans it wouldn’t use a CGI double.) Would it give his little sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) more of a leading role, as she gets in the comics? Or might it drop the series altogether?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it sounds like Marvel is going with option B. Some of its sources have indeed heard that Wright will taking on a more prominent role. Shooting is set to begin in July of next year and last for upwards of six months.
If they’re going to go forward with the sequel, that seems like the most sensible path. THR also has it that Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta (Narcos: Mexico) is in talks to play one of the bad guys. Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are all expected to return from the first movie.
So fans have that to look forward to. But as many Marvel movies as there are upcoming (Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, etc), the focus at Marvel right now is the slate of MCU TV shows coming up, starting with WandaVision in January and moving into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, She-Hulk, Moon Knight and more. “The series are the priority,” said one source. “Ramping them up takes a lot of focus. The movie machinery is well established.”
Whether you like your entertainment on the big screen or the small, 2021 and beyond is going to give you a lot of Marvel options, whereas 2020 was the first year in a long while to have none.
