Frank Oz (Yoda) calmly takes down angry Last Jedi hater
The voice behind Yoda has a wonderfully polite comeback to a fan hating on Rian Johnson, the director behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Frank Oz, the veteran actor and puppeteer behind Yoda and many other cherished characters, has clapped back in a most polite manner to one of the many critics of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the much-maligned eight episode of the saga directed by Rian Johnson.
The exchange started, as they so often do, on Twitter, when a troll replied to a fairly innocuous tweet from Johnson (about why Netflix should play credits after a movie) with a completely unrelated tirade expressing his wish that “someone breaks something you cherish” and that Johnson “apologize EVERY DAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.”
Clearly, this person feels some kind of way about The Last Jedi. Cutting through the noise, Oz’s replied with a calmness worthy of Yoda:
"It’s sad to me that you’ve harbored this internal darkness for so long about a movie. Rian is a great director, writer, & human being. Please try to understand that writers & directors are not there to fulfill the audience’s expectations. Good work breaks expectations."
And he didn’t even use the caps-lock key.
In this age of both heightened fandom and fan service, which in extremes can lead to petitions signed by millions calling for the remaking of supposedly mishandled creations worth millions of dollars in the first place, it’s a timely reminder that the audience is not, and should not, be in control.
