House of the Dragon filming starts “in a few months”—See the dragons!
By Dan Selcke
HBO gives us an update on House of the Dragon, it’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, including concept art for some of the dragons!
Today, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar wrote a Medium post announcing a bold new plan for its slate of 2021 movies: it’s going to release them on HBO Max and into theaters at the same time. Pretty wild.
Almost as an afterthought, at the bottom of that post he included an update about House of the Dragon: “Principal photography starts on the next Game of Thrones series, House of the Dragon, in a few months. Look out for dragons overhead!”
A few months, huh? That’s pretty exciting!
We know that House of the Dragon will cover the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal Targaryen civil war fought over 100 years before the events of the main show. We know a lot of the main players in the drama, but almost nothing about actors. The only thing we know for sure is that Paddy Considine will play King Viserys I, the kind whose precipitates the civil war of succession. There are also rumors about who may play his younger brother Daemon, but nothing solid yet.
Better yet, Kilar also dropped concept art for a couple of the dragons involved in the story! While dragons have died out by the time Game of Thrones begins, they’re everywhere during the Dance, with many of our principal players having one of their own. Take a look:
We can’t know for sure, but this might be Caraxes, known as the Blood Wyrm, an extremely powerful dragon first ridden by Prince Aemon Targaryen and later by the aforementioned Prince Daemon Targaryen.
Again, I’m not certain, but this looks like it could be Sunfyre the Golden, the dragon ridden by King Aegon II Targaryen, the leader of one of the two main factions in the Dance of the Dragons; the other is led by Rhaenyra Targaryen, his half-sister. Sunfyre is known as one of the most beautiful dragons to ever be part of House of Targaryen, although he was fierce and deadly as well.
It looks like HBO Is getting more comfortable releasing details about House of the Dragon, so hopefully we’ll have more soon!
