Streaming Wars, November 2020: Netflix still king of the mountain

A month after Quibi’s death, the remaining combatants in the streaming wars fight on. Here’s what the battlefield looked like in November.

Every month, we keeping track of the victories and defeats, the wins and the losses, the triumphs and the tragedies of the ongoing battle to monopolize your time in front of the TV. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and more are all in a war for your attention, but not everyone can win.

We map out all of the ups and downs of the streaming wars on an ever-evolving chart, but for now, here are the past month’s movements across the battlefield:

CBS All Access (21)

Pretty much all that happened at CBS All Access this month was more new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery. That’s nice, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. Points: +/- 0

Netflix (68)

In addition to older titles, Netflix continues to pump out original content, the most prominent of which in November were probably the fourth season of The Crown, new episodes of The Great British Baking Show, and the dreadfully reviewed Hillbilly Elegy, which clearly touched a nerve. The service also got some good press when it removed Chappelle’s Show from its library on the request of Dave Chappelle himself, who wasn’t cut in on the original deal. Finally, chess drama The Queen’s Gambit continued to be an unexpected smash success. Points: + 3

Disney+ (43)

In addition to more new episodes of The Mandalorian, Disney+ brought subscribers a couple new documentary series in November: one that took fans behind the scenes of Pixar and the other behind the scenes at Marvel. All that and a new adaptation of beloved horse story Black Beauty. Not bad, all things considered. Points: + 2

Hulu (30)

Hulu continues to have a steady stream of old movies and TV shows coming in, plus a few buzzworthy originals in the form of documentary I Am Greta, about activist Greta Thunberg, and Run, a thriller starring Sarah Paulson. Points: + 1

HBO Max (31)

This month, HBO Max subscribers got to enjoy new stuff like The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air Reunion Special and a new season of His Dark Materials, plus older fare like The Hobbit trilogy and all the LEGO movies. But the big news was that Wonder Woman 1984 will come to the service in December. Plus, HBO Max is finally on Amazon Fire devices, with Roku hopefully on the way! Until the service is available there, it’s not fully in the game. Points: + 2

Amazon Prime Video (40)

Amazon Prime Video got some binge-worthy sitcoms in the form of Community and Scrubs, plus a respectable smattering of new movies. So far as originals go, it gots the first season of teen spy thriller Alex Rider, the London anthology show Small Axe, and The Pack, a reality competition show all about the bond between people and their dogs. Points: + 1

Apple TV+ (23)

Becoming You, a documentary about childhood development, is interesting. Doug Unplugs, a new children’s series from Dreamworks Animation, is charming. But nothing here is moving the needle. Points: +/- 0

Peacock (24)

Peacock got some old favorites to enjoy, including some of the Bourne movies, The Fifth Element and more. But the big ticket item was the reboot of Saved by the Bell, which reviewed better than a lot of people were expecting and seems to have found an audience. Points: + 2
