Dafne Keen made a huge splash as Wolverine’s fierce sidekick X-23 in Logan. There WAS a sequel planned, but it never happened. Why not?

Actor Dafne Keen is only 15 years old, but she’s already been in some fantastic stuff. She’s currently appearing as lead character Lyra Belacqua on HBO’s His Dark Materials alongside her father, Will Keen. Before that, she played X-23/Laura in Logan, partnering up with Hugh Jackman for his swan song as Wolverine.

She was scrappy and fierce in this role, and fans have long wondered if she would ever return to it. Speaking to Elle, Keen revealed that there was talk about a sequel…at one point. “I got told by some people at Fox that there might be another one, but this was ages ago when we were filming, and they haven’t contacted me ever again.”

Indeed, Logan director James Mangold even shared his dreams of an X-23 sequel with The Hollywood Reporter back in 2017, so there was definitely a lot of talk at one point:

"[Patty Jenkins’] success with [Wonder Woman] only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming."

It’s a shame nothing has come of it. But Keen still feels that there’s more to X-23’s story, especially after she appeared to go on her own journey at the end of Logan. “I feel like we’re just at the beginning, there’s more to be told, and it’s a relay race,” she said. “I come into play when they’ve already written and done pre-production and decided on doing the film, so as soon as they say, ‘go,’ I’ll happily go whenever.”

Disney bought the Fox and the rights to the X-Men characters last year, so if Keen has a future as X-23, it’ll be with them. Maybe she could appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she could interact with a much larger array of characters.

We, like Mangold, can dream.

Next. Let’s dreamcast the X-Men before they appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. dark
