Doctor Who news: Time Lord Victorious: Mutually Assured Destruction is out now!
By James Aggas
The Eighth Doctor is trapped on a ship full of Daleks in the last installment of Big Finish’s trilogy for the epic multi-platform event Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious!
We’ve got several exciting new releases for Doctor Who event Time Lord Victorious this week. The first is the final story of Big Finish’s trilogy for the Eighth Doctor. Starring Paul McGann, Mutually Assured Destruction focuses on the Doctor trapped on a disintegrating Dalek spaceship. Big Finish have described it as “Die Hard with Daleks” – which quite frankly just sounds amazing.
Unsurprisingly, writer Lizzie Hopley was excited about this pitch.
"I can honestly say it’s one of my favourite things that I’ve ever written for Big Finish. The Dalek Time Squad, who are running the ship, were new to me so playing with them was great fun. As fast as they are doing their repairs, the Doctor is thwarting them at every turn."
This sounds like an exciting story to listen to – one that sees the Doctor trapped on a ship with his oldest enemies and forced to improvise drastically. But what lead to this moment? Perhaps the answers will lie in another story entirely…
Today’s release continues from last month’s audio The Enemy of My Enemy – but it also continues from a story yet to be released…

The trilogy’s finale
Last month saw the Eighth Doctor being forced to ally himself with the Dalek Time Squad in The Enemy of My Enemy. Does this story continue from that audio? Well…yes and no. The timeline has listed that Mutually Assured Destruction takes place for Eight after tomorrow’s major novel, All Flesh is Grass.
Will this story work well on its own terms? It should do – after all, one thing we’ve been consistently promised about Time Lord Victorious is that each story, or at least each medium, can be enjoyed on its own. Yes, there are links between all of these different stories – some clear, some subtle. But all of them should still be able to be enjoyed separately.
The Eighth Doctor’s audio trilogy for Time Lord Victorious has been an enjoyable one so far. We’re definitely keen to listen to Mutually Assured Destruction before reading All Flesh is Grass. While the latter story (which will be released tomorrow) takes place a little earlier for Eight, it’s important to see how well the audio trilogy works on its own terms. Expect a review from us covering it later this week.
