Chris Pine in talks to star in Dungeons & Dragons movie

Chris Pine may come on board Paramount’s upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie. Roll 20 to see if he gets the lead.

Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most popular role-playing games of all times, with over 20 million rulebooks sold and new people continuing to find it all the time (2020 was an especially big year for the game, what with everybody stuck inside with nothing else to do). And given that every studio executive and their mother is trying to have the next big fantasy hit now that Game of Thrones is off the air, it was only a matter of time before someone tapped D&D.

And lo, Hasbro/eOne and Paramount have joined forces to make a new Dungeons & Dragons movie with Deadline reporting that Star Trek and Wonder Woman veteran Chris Pine is in talks to appear in it, although there are no details on his role. Does he play a warrior? A wizard? A rogue? Maybe he can roll for it.

Dungeons & Dragons has been spun off into a lot of different media, including video games, books and movies, although none of the films have left much of a dent in the culture. The best remembered D&D movie is 2000’s Dungeons & Dragons, and that’s mainly because it features Jeremy Irons screeching like a scenery-munching madman:

I mean, if I’m being honest I don’t hate that, but I’m betting that writer-directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Spider-Man: Homecoming) will want to go a bit subtler for the new one.

Marvel Studios executive Jeremy Latcham will produce this new movie, giving it yet another creative link to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cause if you suspect that Paramount wants Dungeons & Dragons to be the start of a franchise that can follow in the MCU’s footsteps and can keep raking in cash for years, you are absolutely right.
