House of the Dragon already has more female directors than Game of Thrones

For the first season of House of the Dragon, HBO has lined up veteran directors of shows like Lost, The Witcher and of course, Game of Thrones.

Last week, HBO revealed some of the actors who will play major parts in House of the Dragon, its Game of Thrones prequel show. That’s a big deal for fans everywhere, but Game of Thrones never survived on its actors alone. HBO also revealed the lineup for directors for the show’s first season.

House of the Dragon has two showrunners: Colony showrunner Ryan Condal and Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, who directed classic episodes like “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter.” Sapochnik will direct the pilot and probably another episode or two.

Also on board are Clare Kilner, who’s directed episodes of shows like Eastenders and Pennyworth as well as movies like How to Deal and The Wedding Date. Then there’s Geeta Patel, who’s directed episode of Dead to MeThe MagiciansThe Witcher and more. Finally, Greg Yaitanes directed episodes of shows like LostHeroes and House, winning an Emmy for the latter. He also directed the 2003 miniseries Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune.

Game of Thrones was a famously elaborate show, and I’m looking forward to seeing what these directors can do with the story of the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war that tore Westeros apart over 100 years before the original series began.

It’s also worth noting that two of the directors in this lineup are women. Game of Thrones got dinged as it went on for a dearth of female talent behind the camera, with Breaking Bad director Michelle MacLaren being the only woman to lens an episode. In that regard, House of the Dragon is already outpacing it.

House of the Dragon begins shooting in just a few months. There’s no release date yet, but expect the first season to come along sometime in 2022.

Next. House of the Dragon has one more “lead character” to cast. dark
