Pedro Pascal rebuffs rumors he wanted to take off his Mandalorian helmet

For a while, there were rumors swirling that Pedro Pascal hated his Mandalorian helmet so much he stormed off the set. Not so much.

Listen, we all love rumors. Especially during our current pandemic year when we’re all stuck inside, it’s fun to gossip, but we also all know not to believe everything we hear…or read.

For example, before the season 2 premiere of The Mandalorian, there were rumors going around that star Pedro Pascal was getting fed up with having to wear a helmet all the time and even stormed off set. And even if that wasn’t true, apparently he was so miffed that he was only doing voiceover performance while other actors filled out the Mando suit.

From the start, it was pretty hard to believe that Pedro Pascal would participate in these kinds of diva antics, but falsehood travels a lot faster than truth, especially on the internet, so the story got around. Now, Pascal himself has debunked the rumors on BBC’s The One Show.

“That is not true, actually,” Pascal said. “It’s a really wonderful way of telling the story, it’s always been a very clear creed for the character and the collaborative process of the whole thing has been– we’ve all been on the same page with this, so I, you know, what I want is for them to make the best show possible however they get that done.”

From the start, Mando’s story has always been that he belongs to a sect of Mandalorian’s who refuse to show their faces to anyone else, so the rumors never really made sense: this is something about the character Pascal would have known going in, so why would he get upset about it?

It also means that on the rare occasions when Mando does remove his helmet, it means more. He was willing to do it to get information on Baby Yoda’s whereabouts in the most recent episode, giving us an uninterrupted view of his face for the longest stretch of time yet.

I wonder if he’s getting more comfortable with the idea of taking off his helmet after meeting Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) and her followers earlier in the season; they’re Mandalorians, but they don’t follow as strict a creed as he does. Plus, Baby Yoda’s welfare was at stake, so of course Mando did what he had to do.

Speaking of Baby Yoda, Pascal is sticking to the company line and insisting that he only uses the character’s official, Disney-approved names. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he joked. “I know Grogu and the Child.”

Yeah, I think Disney lost that battle over a year ago. In any case, we’ll see if Mando and company can rescue Baby Yoda when The Mandalorian season 2 finale airs this Friday on Disney+!
