Doctor Who: The War Master – The epic new fan trailer you have to see
By James Aggas
Perhaps one of Doctor Who’s best spin-offs ever, The War Master has been brilliantly brought to life in an exciting new YouTube trailer from OChenery and Dalekium.
Big Finish has released many Doctor Who spin-offs over the years (and we do mean many, with over a dozen original different series based on Doctor Who alone). Arguably one of the very best in recent years is The War Master.
This is partly because, with the show’s biggest villain as the protagonist, the series is allowed to be a lot darker than most. Equally important is the fact that it features perhaps one of the greatest actors to ever play the evil Time Lord – Derek Jacobi, reprising the incarnation we (far too briefly) saw in the Tenth Doctor story Utopia.
Since 2017, we’ve had several series of the spin-off released, including the recent box set Hearts of Darkness. Across these box sets and their many stories, the War Master has encountered Ood, Daleks, and even the Eighth Doctor. All of these feature in an incredible new fan trailer from Oliver Chenery (under the YouTube name OChenery), with music from Peter Miles (Dalekium). Watch for yourself the extremely epic trailer in the clip below.

Cinematic
Impressive, isn’t it? The trailer works for several reasons. First of all, the visuals are fantastic. Chenery doesn’t overcomplicate anything and simply focuses on some of the spin-off’s key characters.
There’s some inspiration from previously used visuals for the series, particularly the covers (the original artists of which are credited in the trailer). But Chenery’s work definitely stands out as his own. For example, the first visual of Jacobi’s Master is a nice reference to the cover of the spin-off’s first episode, Beneath the Viscoid, while bringing it to life in an exciting new way.
The other reason why this trailer is so impressive is Miles’s exciting new rendition of the theme tune. Ioan Morris’s original theme tune stands out as one of Big Finish’s best ones, being dark and epic enough to kick off each episode to a thrilling start. Miles’s new arrangement feels bigger, grander, even cinematic.
In fact, that’s definitely the keyword that should be used for this trailer overall: cinematic. This feels like the kind of trailer you’d want to see on the big screen and gives us an exciting new take on one of Big Finish’s best series.
