Wonder Woman 1984 director talks post-credits scene, sequel possibilities
The post-credits scene for Wonder Woman 1984 is so secret that not even people with advance screeners are getting to see it.
Wonder Woman 1984 comes out on Christmas Day, both in theaters and on HBO Max. It won’t be a normal theatrical experience, but the film still adheres to the superhero movie tradition of giving viewers a little something extra after the credits are over.
And critics won’t get to see it ahead of time! Appearing on an episode of the ReelBlend podcast, director Patty Jenkins explained why early screeners didn’t contain the additional footage. “Let it be something to save for the audience,” she said. “God forbid, somebody writes about it you’re like, ‘Well, then what fun was it!?'” Since many fans won’t get to see Diana take on the ‘80s on the big screen, we’ll take whatever added fun we can get!
A lot of post-credits scenes in superhero films teases sequels, going all the way back to the end of 2008’s Iron Man when Nick Fury recruits Tony Stark into the Avengers. But don’t expect anything like that from Wonder Woman 1984. A third movie was initially planned, but with COVID-related delays and other unforeseen obstacles, it’s been put on hold.
“It’s interesting, I can actually came up with a story, and Geoff Johns and I beat out an entire story for Wonder Woman 3 that we were super fired up about, but I’ve never felt this way before as much as I do now,” Jenkins explained. “I don’t think I’m doing it next and so, I sort of have to wait and see where we are in the world, you know?”
That uncertainty, unfortunately, seems to be the case for most things in Hollywood these days. Still, at least fans of Jenkins’ work can count on seeing her Star Wars project, Rogue Squadron, somewhere down the line. They can also count on seeing Diana again in the Snyder Cut of Justice League, which hits HBO Max in March 2021.
