The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian season 3 to run at the same time

The Book of Boba Fett is the latest Star Wars show coming to Disney+! See the official logo and hear all about it from The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau.
At the end of The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale, viewers learned that Disney was making a show all about Boba Fett, the bounty hunter thought dead after Return of the Jedi who returned for a whole new arc, and now looks to have a new gig at the head of Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire. Get ready for The Book of Boba Fett!
This was surprising news, because Disney had unveiled several new Star Wars series literally days before and hadn’t mentioned The Book of Boba Fett, even though they’d already filmed a little teaser for it with cast members Temuera Morrison (Boba) and Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand). Now, appearing on Good Morning, America, The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau shared some details about the upcoming show.
“We didn’t want to spoil the surprise during the big Kathleen Kennedy announcement of all the shows [during Investor Day earlier this month], so they let me keep this one a secret, ” Favreau said. “So this is actually separate from The Mandalorian season 3. But what we didn’t say in that announcement is the next show coming up — what Kathy called ‘the next chapter’ — is going to be The Book of Boba Fett, and then we go into production right after that on The Mandalorian, back with the main character that we all know and love… pretty soon following that. There’s a lot of Star Wars content coming out, I think they announced 10 projects, I think this will be 11.”
So The Book of Boba Fett will shoot first, and then The Mandalorian season 3. But Entertainment Weekly says they’ll both premiere in December of 2021, meaning they’ll run concurrently.
And as Favreau says, those are just two of many, many Star Wars shows coming down the pike, including:
- An Ahsoka Tano show — apparently Star Wars: The Clone Wars showrunner Dave Filoni will take the lead on this one
- Rangers of the New Republic, which will be set in the same timeline as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka — those shows will be in conversation with each other
- A show about Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) from Rogue One
- An Obi-Wan Kenobi show, featuring Ewan McGregor back in the role and Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader
- The Bad Batch, an animated spinoff of The Clone Wars
- Visions, an anime-inspired Star Wars show
- A series about Lando Calrissian
- The Acolyte, which is set deep in Star Wars’ past
- A Droid Story, headlined by R2-D2 and C-3PO
So yeah, add in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett and you have 11 series, not to mention the new movies on the way. That’s a lot of Star Wars.
Another note is that Robert Rodriguez, who directed The Mandalorian episode “The Tragedy,” where Baby Yoda was taken, is on board The Book of Boba Fett as an executive producer. That pretty much guarantees he’ll be directing an episode or two, as well.
One question I still have is whether The Book of Boba Fett is going to be a longform series like The Mandalorian or a shorter, discrete show like Obi-Wan Kenobi. I guess we’ll leave some questions for after the holidays.
