Eternals, Maleficent concept artist joins House of the Dragon
By Dan Selcke
Game of Thrones had outstanding, eye-catching costumes, and so must the prequel show House of the Dragon. HBO is building out the team behind the scenes.
HBO is busy building its team for House of the Dragon, it’s follow-up to Game of Thrones. Much like the original show, House of the Dragon will focus on the upper crust of Westeros, specifically the Targaryen family, who will battle each other in a brutal civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
With characters with pedigrees like this, the show will need talented people conceiving and executing the costumes, something Game of Thrones always excelled at. We don’t know who will be leading the team, but Benjamin Ip — who helped design high-concept costumes for movies like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Eternals — recently revealed on his Instagram Stories that he’s come on board the show:
Oh, are they already making hats for the cast and crew? Nice.
Ip has worked as a costume concept illustrator and is listed as a concept artist for House of the Dragon on IMBd. Admittedly, IMDb isn’t the most sterling of sources, but the job description sounds about right given his past work.
Speaking of his past work, you can check out plenty on Ip’s Instagram, where he’s posted some very eye-catching stuff:
With that last armored gown, you almost get the idea that Ip got inspiration from some of the outfits in the final seasons of Game of Thrones:

Game of Thrones had a few costume designers in its time, the most notable of whom was Michele Clapton. There’s no word on whether she might return for the prequel series, but with Ip, the show seems to have a professional who can work well in this mode.
