Chadwick Boseman’s final MCU appearance will be in What…If? series on Disney+

Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe one more time, in an animated series coming to Disney+.
The tragic death of Chadwick Boseman earlier this year was and is still something we’re all trying to work through and deal with. It was an unexpected tragedy, but he will continue to live on in our hearts as Black Panther.
Luckily for MCU fans, we’ll get to hear Boseman perform as King T’Challa one last time, in the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series, What…If? This will mark Boseman’s final appearance in the MCU.
What If…? is an animated anthology series that will explore what would have happened if select events in the MCU had gone differently, all of it presented to us by Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright). One story will look at what would have happened if King T’Challa had become Star-Lord rather than Black Panther.
Speaking with Emmy Magazine, Feige shared a few details about Boseman’s participation in the series. “He came in about four times and recorded numerous episodes. In hindsight, it’s very moving.”
I don’t think any of us are ready for it: the minute I hear Boseman’s voice, I’ll be bawling. That said, I’m thankful we get one last encounter with King T’Challa, even if it’s as Star-Lord.
During Disney’s Investor Day conference two weeks ago, Feige revealed that Marvel will move forward with Black Panther 2, but will not be recasting the role of King T’Challa/Black Panther, or making a CGI digital double. In the MCU, the role of King T’Challa belongs to Chadwick Boseman and Chadwick Boseman alone, and I, for one, am so grateful for that decision.
Instead, the sequel will dive deeper into “the incomparable world of Wakanda and all of the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film.” Most likely we’ll be seeing Letitia Wright’s Shuri take over as the Black Panther in honor of her brother, which has happened in the Black Panther comics.
Ryan Coogler will return to write and direct the film, which is currently set for a release date of July 8, 2022. It will certainly be difficult to watch a Black Panther movie without the man himself, but I have full faith that Coogler and the cast will honor Coseman as best they can while continuing to tell the incredible story of Wakanda.
