Taika Waititi names his favorite Star Wars movie moment

We don’t know much about Taika Waititi’s forthcoming Star Wars movie, but if it equals the power of his favorite Star Wars scene, we’re in for a treat.

Star Wars is absolutely everywhere on the small screen at the moment, with no fewer than 10 series on or coming to Disney+. But so far as the big screen goes, we’re taking a bit of a break following the release of The Rise of Skywalker last year. Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins is making a movie called Rogue Squadron, but we don’t know much about it yet. We know even less about the Star Wars movie being made by Taika Waititi, the Oscar-winning director behind Thor: RagnarokJojo Rabbit and What We Do In The Shadows. Pretty much everything this guy touches turns to gold, so even though we don’t know what he has planned yet, the hype is already high.

Maybe we can find clues by looking at what he says about other Star Wars movies. He and several other filmmakers participated in a video Disney released this week talking about the legacy of The Empire Strikes Back, the second film in the saga. In it, Waititi reveals his favorite Star Wars scene:

"My favorite moment is on Dagobah when Luke is trying to bring his X-wing out of the swamp. Then Yoda, with his three little fingers, brings the thing out of the swamp. Not only just brings it up to the surface, out of the water, and what does Luke say? “I don’t believe it.” That, for me, is the best moment in the film. That’s a message I can take with me throughout my life."

And then, of course, Yoda tells Luke, “That is why you fail.” Harsh but true. Believe, Luke! Believe, Taika!

That’s one of several iconic scenes from The Empire Strikes Back, and a worthy favorite for anybody.

It’s no secret that The Rise of Skywalker was divisive among the Star Wars fandom, possibly even more so than The Last Jedi was before it. Like I said, Waititi hasn’t taken a wrong step yet, so if anybody can get the Star Wars fans to rally around a new movie, it might be him.

That said, he’s keeping his sense of humor about him during the whole thing. “Ugh, as a longtime fan of Star Wars I’m so angry about what I’m about to do to ruin it,” he wrote on his Instagram. That attitude should come in very handy.
