Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins returning to finish Wonder Woman “trilogy”

Wonder Woman 1984 came out in both theaters and on HBO Max this weekend, and it did so well that Warner Bros. has greenlit a third film!
After many delays, Wonder Woman 1984 finally came out this past weekend, simultaneously releasing in both theaters and on HBO Max. And according to Warner Bros., it was a success. About half of the subscribers to HBO Max watched the film on Friday, with millions more viewing through cable or wireless access, per Variety. Despite only 39% of theaters being open in the US, the movie has done good business there, too, netting $16.7 million domestically and $68 million internationally for a grand total of $85 million, with a lot of the US haul coming from people renting out theaters for them and their friends. That may not be huge numbers for normal times, but for the age of COVID, it’s record-breaking.
So naturally, Warner Bros. has announced that a third Wonder Woman movie is coming, with Gal Gadot returning to star and Patty Jenkins coming back to direct. “As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,” said Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich.
Was this always going to be a trilogy? I don’t remember, but it makes sense; tentpole films tend to come in threes.
The success of Wonder Woman 1984 at the analog box office may also embolden Warner Bros. to push forward with its strategy of releasing all of its 2021 movies direct to HBO Max at the same time they come out in theaters, a move that has angered several of the filmmakers behind those movies. Of course, it’s only been a few days. Things can turn fast in Hollywoodland.
