Harrison Ford’s scorn for Star Wars goes viral…again

Harrison Ford’s old wisecracks about how little he cares about Star Wars are spreading again. But there may be a new Star Wars everyman to take his place.

Ever since Star Wars: A New Hope premiered in 1977, the Star Wars franchise has been a pop cultural cornerstone. While the films are beloved by many, longtime fans know that Harrison Ford, the actor who brought to life wisecracking smuggler Han Solo, doesn’t much care about the world or the character he plays.

Han Solo was Harrison Ford’s breakout role, and he went on to have an incredible career, acting in films like Witness, The Fugitive, Air Force One, Clear and Present Danger and the Indiana Jones film franchise. Unlike his Star Wars costar Mark Hamill, who has embraced his role as Luke Skywalker in the hearts and minds of millions of fans, Harrison Ford has made it clear that Han Solo is just another acting job to him.

With 2020 finally coming to a close, Harrison Ford’s contempt for the franchise has made headlines once again, although he hasn’t said anything new. The Twitter account Star Wars Facts recently reposted a rather blunt quote Ford gave to USA Today early this year:

Well, at least he’s honest!

Han Solo perished at the hands of his son Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The character appeared posthumously in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to help Kylo Ren reclaim his identity as Ben Solo. The idea of Force ghosts has been an element of Star Wars for decades, but it seems that Ford doesn’t bother himself with those details.

But we have another Star Wars actor who seems far more willing to embrace the mythology: Pedro Pascal, the star of The Mandalorian. Director Robert Rodriguez, who directed an episode of The Mandalorian’s second season and also worked with Pascal in the new Netflix movie We Can Be Heroes, compared Pascal to Ford while talking to Den of Geek:

"He reminds me of Harrison Ford in a way, he’s like this everyman type guy. He can be funny, he can be really intense, he can be very heroic, but in We Can Be Heroes he kind of has to be a dweebish dad where it’s just all about him and his daughter. He played that really well and was then also able to become this superhero. He can be very human and warm. In The Mandalorian he does a similar type of thing but with that heart. But he can play intense too. He’s got a wide range."

Pedro Pascal has demonstrated his acting prowess again and again. I still love watching Narcos because of his stellar performance as Javier Peña. You can see him in Wonder Woman: 1984 on HBO Max and We Can Be Heroes on Netflix right now!
