A Daryl-Carol divide is coming on The Walking Dead?

More episodes of The Walking Dead season 10 are coming. A sneak peek teases a potential split between Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus).

The end is in sight for The Walking Dead, with the show set to finally come to an end after season 11. But before we get there, we still have six additional episodes of season 10 coming in February. And a recent sneak peek of a virtual table read teases a potential split between Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus).

Daryl and Carol are two of the longest-living characters in the series, and during their time together they have formed a fierce partnership that fans have loved to watch develop. In fact, this year the duo came in at number 66 on Tumblr’s end-of-year review of Top Ships, the first time a Walking Dead duo has ever featured on the list. And they’ll continue to thrive after the main show ends with a road-show style spinoff series.

But that’s a few years away. For now, the latest season 10 teaser shows a heated divide between these two best friends. In the reading of “Diverged,” the fifth of the six extra episodes, Daryl is described as doused in “mud, motor oil, and walker gore” while Carol is covered in “drywall, plaster dust.” No major changes there. However, their dialogue is ominous:

"CAROL: “What the hell happened to you?”DARYL:  “I was gonna ask you the same thing.”CAROL: “You don’t have to apologize. I’m good. Really.”DARYL: “I was just gonna wish you luck.”"

Following their short discussion, they move in opposite directions “without any further word.”

The pair have been pondering the notion of running away together for a while now, with New Mexico getting brought up a lot. But this new argument throws up a roadblock. Nevertheless, they have a whole season to work it out. Besides, we don’t know the full context; it’s too early to get worried.

We should be much more concerned with the arrival of the Commonwealth, a corrupt community from the comics, and the looming threat of the CRM. In The Walking Dead: World Beyond, we’ve learned just how powerful and fierce the CRM can be. Star Julia Ormond (Elizabeth) recently told the AMC Blog how that threat could stretch to all the corners of the Walking Dead universe:

"And so what we find out about in The Walking Dead: World Beyond is that there is this force out there that could be overwhelming to these other characters that we’ve come to know and love in The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, that suddenly could turn tables on people. So if we get it right, there’s something about learning about The Walking Dead: World Beyond that sets up an existential threat for the others."

The coming sextet of episodes will explore multiple characters. So far, it’s believed that there will be a catch-up episode for Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who rejoined the group in the season 10 finale, “A Certain Doom.” There is also going to be a Negan origin story, maybe adapting Robert Kirkman’s “Here’s Negan” comic. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s real-life wife, Hilarie Burton, will play Negan’s wife Lucille in the episode! And now, it appears as if Daryl and Carol will feature episode 5, “Diverged.”

The upcoming season 10 episodes will start airing on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021.
