Seven years after a controversial finale, Dexter is coming back with a new story and a new villain, but with Michael C. Hall back in the lead role.

There is nothing I can say about Dexter that hasn’t already been said. The show about do-gooding serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) was terrific show for several seasons before bottoming out in the series finale, where Dexter moved away and apparently became a lumberjack, leaving his young son with another serial killer. We’ve heard it all.

But now, Dexter is getting its chance at redemption, as Showtime has announced that it’s reviving the show this year. Since then, Michael C. Hall has been making the rounds and assuring fans that, this time, things will be different.

Hall talked to The Daily Beast about what’s in store, and why now was the perfect time to revisit that…ending:

"Yeah. It’s a conversation that’s been ongoing, and different possibilities have emerged over the years. I think in this case, the story that’s being told is worth telling in a way that other proposals didn’t, and I think enough time has passed where it’s become intriguing in a way that it wasn’t before. And let’s be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, “What the hell happened to that guy?” So I’m excited to step back into it. I’ve never had that experience of playing a character this many years on."

Seriously, what did happen to that guy?

At this point in time, we don’t know a whole lot about the Dexter revival, including what familiar faces might pop up during it. However, The Wrap reports that the revival has cast the big bad who will go up against Dexter: Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) will play Kurt Caldwell, “the unofficial mayor of a small town, Iron Lake.” Based on Showtime’s character description, Caldwell “…realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop. Powerful, generous, loved by everyone — he’s a true man of the people. If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you.”

Is he a serial killer, too? Even in hiding, Dexter meets the worst people.

Clyde Phillips, the showrunner on the first four seasons of Dexter (the best ones) is all set to return for the revival. So we can only hope he and Hall teaming back up will erase the atrocious memories of season 8 when the new episodes air later this year.
