HBO Max is making a TV show based on a Batman movie that hasn’t come out yet, and there’s already some turnover behind the scenes.

There’s a new Batman show coming to HBO Max, set in the universe director Matt Reeves will debut in The Batman. You might think that it’s premature to be making a show based on a movie that isn’t even out yet, but then you wouldn’t be thinking like a studio executive.

The show will explore the dirty underbelly of Gotham City through the eyes of one of its many corrupt cops. The timeline reportedly lines up with Batman’s first year on the job, although it remains unclear if Robert Pattinson will show up as the Caped Crusader (and if he does, you know they’ll save that for the season finale at least). Sounds interesting enough, but there’s already been a big shift behind the scenes: original showrunner Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire) has departed, with English writer Joe Barton (The Ritual) coming on board.

Shifts like this are fairly common behind the scenes of shows as they get up and running, so I don’t think it’s cause for alarm, yet. Reeves himself seems very enthused about the project. “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long-form format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream,” he said last summer. Except for the bit about working with Terence Winter, that’s all very encouraging!

It’s a great time to be a Batman fan, with so many Bat projects in the works. Michael Keaton has signed on to return as Batman after nearly three decades away from the role in the upcoming Flash movie, while Ben Affleck will return to the cape and cowl in 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League, aka the Snyder Cut.

The Batman is due in theaters on March 4, 2022. As for the show, who knows?

Next. Morbius release date gets pushed back, obviously. dark
