Christopher Eccleston hans’t played the Doctor for over 15 years, but returning to the role for a new series of audio adventures was easier than he expected.
Christopher Eccleston brought Doctor Who back to the small screen in 2005 as the Ninth Doctor, but has avoided returning to the role since, even as successors like David Tennant have been happy to reprise the role. But he’s finally back in the TARDIS for a series of full-cast audiobook adventures. Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Ravagers is coming in May 2021, marking the first time Eccleston has played the role in over 15 years.
There will be four volumes of stories in the Ravagers series. The titles for the first volume of stories has already been released: “Sphere of Freedom,” “Cataclysm” and “Food Fight.” Written by talented Doctor Who scribe Nicholas Briggs, the stories let Eccleston slip back into the role that heralded the return of the Doctor for a new generation of fans. He will be joined in the new audio adventures by Camilla Beeput (Nova) and Jayne McKenna (Audrey).
For Eccleston, who has never minced words about his negative experience working on the show’s first season, return to the role was easier than he expected: “It was lovely coming back to play the role again, due to Nicholas’ writing,” he said. “I was surprised at how very quickly I seemed to recall the choices I made 15 years ago. It was an odd experience; the Ninth Doctor’s still hanging around.”
There have been several new faces in the TARDIS since Eccleston’s tenure, including David Tennant (Tenth Doctor), Matt Smith (Eleventh Doctor), Peter Capaldi (Twelfth Doctor) and the present incarnation with Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. The show continues to bring in cater to an audience of both old and new fans who come back for every regeneration cycle.
The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Ravagers is a chance for Eccleston fans to see him in action once again as the grumpy Ninth Doctor who wore his feelings on his sleeve. All four volumes of the new Doctor Who audio series are available to preorder now.
