Chris Evans denies reports that he’s returning as Captain America

The other day, the internet was aflame with rumors that Chris Evans was returning to play Captain America, but the actor himself (seemingly) shut it all down.

Chris Evans’ portrayal of Steve Rogers/Captain America was hands-down my favorite part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Obviously, Robert Downey Jr. was amazing as Tony Stark, but Chris Evans’ performance just takes the cake. The character evolved so much from his first appearance in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger all the way until his final scene in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and it was truly a joy to watch.

Cap’s story came to a close in Avengers: Endgame after he time traveled back to the past to set things right after defeating Thanos and decided to stay there to grow old with his first love, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). I know that a lot of fans wanted Steve to end up with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), but I thought this conclusion was a beautiful way to wrap up an epic story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Evans seemed to close the door on ever reprising the role again after production on Endgame concluded in 2018. But just the other day, reports were gaining traction that Evans will be returning to the MCU as Captain America once more, and from very reliable sources like Deadline — this wasn’t just some random rumor on Reddit, although there’s nothing wrong with those.

The word was that Evans would return in a supporting capacity for other movies, kind of like how Tony Stark backed up Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming. But Chris Evans himself caught wind of the news and seemingly shut it down on Twitter:

Succinct as ever, Captain!

Even though Evans doesn’t mention the rumor in his post, it seems obvious that that’s what he’s referring to. He played Captain America in nine movies, so I’m not surprised that he wants to put that red, white and blue shield to rest.

Maybe someday another actor will play Captain America and reinvent the role. I mean, there have been about four different versions of Spider-Man in the last two decades, so another actor playing Cap is not so far out of the realm of possibility! And we’ll get to see what happens in the wake of this Cap’s retirement in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is coming to Disney+ in March.

Next. The first two episodes of WandaVision are strange, charming and disturbing. dark
