Powerpuff Girls fans may have reservations about The CW’s live-action reboot, but original creator Craig McCracken is “curious” about the new series.

It’s been a long time since animator Craig McCracken worked on The Powerpuff Girls, but it seems there’s still some interest in the classic Cartoon Network series, spurred on The CW’s announcement that its reimagining the adventures of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup as a live-action series.

The CW’s reboot will be more mature than the original cartoon, exploring what these characters might look like in young adulthood after fighting crime for most of their childhoods. The description of the girls as “disillusioned 20-somethings” makes the series seem like it’s going for an angsty YA tone, one that’s totally off-brand for a cartoon whose leads were made of “sugar, spice, and everything nice.” (Must be that Chemical X.)

McCracken, who brought the original animated show to life, isn’t involved with the upcoming reboot, but he spoke about it during an interview with SYFY WIRE. Although he sounded slightly hesitant — as many fans have been since hearing the news — he also admitted to being intrigued. “I’m curious to see what they do with it,” he said. “The initial concept of Powerpuff Girls was the idea that they were little kids being superheroes, so the fact that they’re making them grow up, that sort of changes that initial concept. But we’ll see what they do with it.”

Although the concept of the Powerpuff Girls going through the teen drama of high school — presumably with superhero drama sprinkled in — is a bit jarring at first, McCracken is probably right to go into it with an open mind. If nothing else, the series sounds like it may be one of the most bonkers additions to The CW lineup yet, which is saying something. And what’s more entertaining than revisiting childhood classics, even if they’re completely different from what we remember?
