Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fronts trailer for Paramount+

A new TV spot for Paramount+ — the streaming service formerly known as CBS All Access — features famous people and characters from across the Paramount and CBS landscape on an expedition up the side of a mountain…the iconic Paramount mountain, to be exact. The trailer, titled “Paramount+ Expedition: Roll Call”, features everyone from Gayle King and James Corden to Beavis and Butthead to Snooki.

In an interesting twist, Captain Pike and Mr. Spock are there to represent the newest show in the ever-expanding Star Trek universe, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The decision to feature these two is interesting given the large number of Star Trek characters — past and present — they could have chosen from.

With Star Trek: Discovery and Picard already available, it’s interesting to think that executives went with a show that hasn’t even started production. Indeed, Strange New Worlds is set to begin filming in February and will go through July.

What we know about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. It follows Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck) as they travel the galaxy aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, the series is set around the same timeline as Star Trek: Discovery. Fans were already introduced to Mount, Romijn and Peck during Discovery’s second season, with their arrival presumably designed to bolster Discovery’s connections to the greater Star Trek Universe.

The decision to promote Captain Pike and Mr. Spock in the trailer over other available possibilities may be a way to honor Discovery while still reaching out to fans who have had a hard time connecting with the show.

There is no premiere date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as of yet. Paramount+ will officially launch on March 4, replacing CBS All Access.
