The Boys — Amazon Prime Video’s gleefully irreverent superhero satire — broke out in a big way in 2020, finding its audience as it turned the screws on its characters in season 2. Now, everyone’s waiting for the third season, which starts filming soon, but how long will the series last overall?
Antony Starr, who plays breakout character Homelander, mused on that question with ComicBook.com. “The length of the run needs to be dictated by the strength of the story and the qualities of the stories that they can come up with,” he said. “I think inevitably, shows — if you’ve got your ear to the ground — you can sense when the train’s coming and you and need to get off the tracks.”
"Hopefully we won’t outstay our welcome and we’ll go out when the time is right, when we’re in a good place. I think everyone’s astute enough to make that call. That said, I think we’ve got a good few seasons in us yet. I think we’ve got a great cast of characters and a really interesting premise, and I think like you said, we can really go anywhere with this. I think it’s a pretty healthy show and I think there’s a good life for it coming up."
Indeed, The Boys seems like it’s just really starting to embrace the potential of its premise, which finds the titular group of freedom fighters trying to expose the Seven — a group of corporate-backed superheroes — for the selfish, power-mad, mass-murdering villains they are, with Homelander as the very worst of them.
What will happen in The Boys season 3?
And it looks like season 3 will continue to pull the curtain back on the Seven’s hedonism. Showrunner Erik Kripke recently revealed the title of the sixth episode of the upcoming season: “Herogasm.”
In the comics, the Herogasm is a regular event where the world’s superheroes gather at an island resort where they partake in a weekend of debaucherous sex and drug use, which sounds very in keeping with the show’s theme. Keep a lookout for it when season 3 premieres, possibly later this year, although it’s possible things get pushed to early 2022. Filming starts soon in any case.
While we wait, you can enjoy this incredibly low-cost version of The Boys, put together by Studio 188 on a shoestring budget:
That’s tremendous. Antony Starr thinks so too, sharing the video to his Instagram. “If we don’t stop COVID season three will look like this,” he wrote. “Stay safe…”
