Simu Liu says Shang-Chi could beat the Hulk in a fight
By Ashley Hurst
Soon enough, we’ll see Simu Liu make his MCU debut as Shang-Chi in the first-ever Asian-led Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. If all goes according to plan, Shang-Chi will become the second movie in Phase 4, after Black Widow.
It’s always exciting to see the MCU introduce a largely unknown superhero, although Shang-Chi has been around for a long time. His first appearance in comics dates back to 1973. He was created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin. However, the character has never appeared on the big screen before, so he’s very much an unknown quantity for moviegoers.
Thankfully, Liu is out here helping people get acquainted with the character, talking to Toronto Life about what would happen if Shang-Chi got into a rumble with the likes of Iron Man, the Hulk and Black Widow:
"I win! Shang-Chi. I could debate this as a fan for hours. But now that I’ve got some skin in the game, I have to think I could take any of these guys on. Shang-Chi can definitely throw a punch. As for his other skills and powers, you’ll have to wait and see."
While Shang-Chi won’t be taking on the Avengers in his upcoming movie, he’ll face off against the real Mandarin (played by Tony Leung) and the 10 Rings terrorist organization.
What is it like for Simu Liu to play the first Asian lead in a Marvel movie in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings?
Additionally, Liu recalled what it was like for him to don his superhero suit for the first time. It was a momentous moment, but that wore off fast. “Marvel has never had an Asian lead. So that was such a rare and impactful moment, for me as an actor but also for people who look like me. I nearly cried. It was so emotional,” Liu remembered. “And then of course by the fifth day, I was like, ‘Oh my god, I hate this thing, why are there so many zippers?’”
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also stars Awkwafina, Fala Chen, Ronny Chieng, Meng’er Zhang, Tony Leung, Florian Munteanu and Michelle Yeoh. The movie premieres on July 9!
While we’re waiting, Phase 4 of the MCU recently kicked off with the weirdly wonderful WandaVision, which is currently streaming on Disney+.
