A Spy Kids reboot is coming from original director Robert Rodriguez
Starring Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, the Spy Kids movies are getting a reboot! Here’s what we know so far.
Hold onto your hats, folks, because I have some amazing news for you. According to SyFy Wire, another one of your favorite film franchises from childhood is getting a reboot: director Robert Rodriguez and Spyglass Media will be reviving the Spy Kids movies! No plot details have been made available, but we do know that Rodriguez will return to write and direct the next installment.
Starring Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, the films focus on Carmen and Juni Cortez, the children of two spies who work for the Organization of Super Spies (OSS). In the first film, Carmen and Juni learn the truth about the parent’s occupations and must save them after a mission goes awry. Subsequent movies focus on Carmen and Juni’s missions, their development as operatives, and their relationship with their family members.
There are currently four films in the series: Spy Kids (2001), Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002), Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (2011). There’s also an animated reboot called Spy Kids: Mission Critical, the first season of which premiered in 2018 on Netflix. The second season premiered later than same year. The franchise is obviously still popular, so it makes sense that Rodriguez would want to explore the story further.
The films also include some wonderful cameos, featuring the likes of Alan Cumming, Teri Hatcher, Tony Shalhoub, Holland Taylor, Steve Buscemi, Jessica Alba, Sylvester Stallone, Salma Hayek and Cheech Marin. The films also star Danny Trejo as Isador “Machete” Cortez, a role that the actor reprised in the spin-off Machete films.
The Sky Kids movies were so fun to watch when I was growing up. Being a spy was just about the coolest job ever to me, so getting to see Carmen and Juni fighting to save their parents while using awesome gadgets instantly drew me in. The opening sequence of the first movie, which shows how Gregorio (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid Cortez (Carla Gugino) first met and fell in love as spies working for opposing sides, belongs in a museum. Watching that scene makes you think that you’re about to watch a full blown spy thriller instead of the kid-friendly comedy that it is.
I can’t wait to see what this reboot has in store for longtime fans of the franchise. While we wait for more details, you can check out the iconic scene I just mentioned below.
