The Mandalorian season 3 to start production sooner than we thought

After a riveting second season packed with Star Wars Easter eggs, the third season of The Mandalorian may not be as far off as we initially thought. According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance, which is “dedicated to providing film and television industry professionals with up-to-date job announcements and casting call opportunities in the entertainment industry,” filming will begin filming on April 5.

What will happen in The Mandalorian season 3?

Details about the third season are being kept under lock and key for the time being. That shouldn’t come as a surprise given how tight the set of season 2 was, with not even cast members realizing that Luke Skywalker was going to make that cameo at the end.

Season 2 ended with Din Djarin and Baby Yoda parting ways (sob). It looks like there could be a dispute between Din and Bo-Katan Kryze over who has the right to rule Mandalore. Also, Ahsoka Tano is still out there doing her thing, and the villainous Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) remains alive, if contained.

According to Esposito, this is far from the end of his character’s journey. “I have a feeling you’ll see more of me next season,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “More than likely you’re going to see a lot of Moff Gideon. I can’t be sure of that, but it seems as though this iconic journey that they want you to feel it. I think you’re going to start to see other storylines start to creep in. When we start to realize there’s such a deep connection [between the show’s storylines and] the rest of the galaxy and what’s really happening. Maybe you’ll get an inkling of what he wants.”

And keep in mind that the characters could turn up on some of the other Star Wars shows Disney is prepping. Both Boba Fett and Ahsoka Tano are getting their own spinoffs, and there’s a show called Rangers of the New Republic that may focus on those guys who pulled Din over in the Frog Lady episode. Suddenly, The Mandalorian is part of a much wider tapestry.

We have no premiere date as of yet, but both The Mandalorian Season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett are set to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2021.
