Guillermo del Toro wants the Pacific Rim robots to fight Godzilla and Kong

The other day, Warner Bros. dropped the trailer for Godzilla Vs. Kong, which is exactly what it looks like and we’re pretty happy about that:

The movie is coming out on March 26 in theaters and on HBO Max. It’s the latest film in Warner Bros.’ kaiju revival, which also includes 2014’s Godzilla and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

And then there’s Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim franchise, which pits people in giant robots against huge monsters from the depths. The first movie was popular enough to have a sequel in 2018, Pacific Rim Uprising, but that didn’t go over as well, so I doubt we’ll see new movies anytime in the near future.

That said, del Toro is an incurable optimist, and teased the idea of the Pacific Rim robots — the Jaegers, to use the proper term — mixing it up with Godzilla and friends at some point:

A kaiju shared universe? Why not, everyone else is doing it.

And y’know, Warner Bros. does put out all of these movies, so there shouldn’t be any rights issues, and Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight told Collider in 2017 that there had been some informal discussions about a potential crossover. Twitter user @MikeLynch001 even dreamt up a vision of what that might look like:

Hopefully that’ll hold us all over.
