HBO may make a Game of Thrones animated series—This anime is way ahead of them

The other week, we learned that HBO is looking into making an animated drama set in the world of Game of Thrones, with executives consulting with A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin on the project. This hasn’t been confirmed, but it certainly looks like WarnerMedia wants to expand the Game of Thrones universe in a way that can compete with what Disney is doing with Star Wars and Marvel right now, and to bolster the not-yet-a-year-old HBO Max streaming service. I wouldn’t be shocked if this ends up coming to fruition.

And HBO already has some good models for what an animated Game of Thrones show could look like. For years, the studio created animated “History and Lore” features for the show’s home video releases, little short films that explored the mythology in more detail. By far their most ambitious effort was a 20-minute animated movie about the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war that will form the basis of the new spin-off show House of the Dragon:

Pump up the animation quality and you could have a nice little show there.

What if Game of Thrones were an anime?

That said, my heart will always belong to this bonkers fan-made trailer for a Game of Thrones anime series, posted by Malec on YouTube back in 2017:

The thrashing music, the dramatic still frames, the random snatches of English thrown into the lyrics…c’mon, this is really fun.

I doubt HBO will actually look to this video for inspiration…but I wouldn’t be mad if they did. And Malec, now that we know the network is actually considering an animated show, any hope for a sequel trailer?
